Education Builds Hope Luncheon 2015

Cecil Dunn - Executive Director of One Parent Scholar House

At the beginning of 2010, the Hope Center took over management of One Parent Scholar House. I couldn’t be happier about this opportunity to do something about homelessness before it has the opportunity to damage another life – or lives.

You see, studies show that families headed by single parents without education are families who face an increased risk of becoming homeless. The children in these families rely on their sole parents, overwhelmingly young women, to provide them with the resources they need for stability, nurture and growth. Without education, these parents are hard-pressed to provide those resources. At One Parent Scholar House, single-parent families receive:

  • Affordable Housing for the Families
  • Higher Education Opportunities for the parents
  • Child Development and Care for the children

I encourage you to read the personal stories on this website. These women and their children will not be tomorrow’s homeless family. They will be tomorrow’s positive contributors. One Parent Scholar House made that possible.

I ask you to take part in this effort. Your donation will help create more stories like this. Think about it. There are many worthy and effective ways to fight homelessness, but this has to be one of the most gratifying.

Thank you for your interest in One Parent Scholar House. We hope this Website will answer any questions you have. If you’re interested in living at One Parent Scholar House, please go to the “I Need Help” button. You will find everything you need to get started towards a better future for you and your children.

Executive Director

All of us at One Parent Scholar House are saddened by the passing of Don Jacobs, a great friend of our organization. He and his wife Cathy have supported One Parent Scholar House through the Don & Mira Ball Education Builds Hope Lunch for many years, and we will miss his devotion to helping our Parent Scholars and Little Scholars succeed. We are grateful for all he did. ... See MoreSee Less

It is with deep regret that we inform you of the passing of a great man, humanitarian and friend, Don Jacobs. Don was a successful businessman, and he shared his success with those who needed a hand up in life. “Don was a man who did well, certainly, but also was a man who did good,” said Cecil Dunn, Executive Director of the Hope Center. “As far as the Hope Center goes, he and Cathy have been very loyal supporters. They have been generous givers. There are hundreds of people who have felt the benefit of their kindness.” Long-time supporters of rebuilding lives, most recently Don and Cathy Jacobs built the Jacobs Hope Cafeteria on West Loudon, a beautiful facility which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner to hundreds of homeless, veterans and mentally ill clients every day. They also built the Don and Cathy Jacobs House which houses men in recovery, veterans, employment and mental health programs. “Don is more than generous. He was involved and cared about his community, and the plight of others,” said Mr. Dunn. As part of his Hope Center involvement, he has supported events, capital campaigns and emergency shelter renovations plus the One Parent Scholar House. He, and his wife Cathy, will always be a part of the Hope Center family. He was a man who put his caring into action and he will be greatly missed.
